Silk fibroin nanofibers containing chondroitin sulfate and silver sulfadiazine for wound healing treatment

Nanofibers containing silk fibroin (SF), chondroitin sulfate (CS) and silver sulfadiazine (SSD) were made up through electrospinning technique, to produce new dressings with the potential control wound infections. Poly (ethylene oxide) (PEO) was added acidic water solution used for improve electrospinnability. Fibers characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR-ATR), energy dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), flame atomic absorption spectrocopy (FAAS) biological analysis. The nanofibers average diameter between 262 328 nm before PEO removal 242 345 after removal. FTIR-ATR DSC results showed that removed from surface of washing as-electrospun fibers absolute ethanol. EDS CS SSD remained in nanofibers. quantification Ag+ ions on nanofiber had a major influence remaining content nanofibers, which 75 100%. Biological assays as-obtained are not toxic healthy Vero cells values 98 100% cell viability. Antibacterial activity tests concentration significantly influenced antibacterial samples. In vivo experiments Wistar rats revealed SF similar standard cream treatment, advantage being applied only once patient, avoiding discomfort pain dressing changes. played an important role as stabilizing agent solutions improving SSD-remaining enhancing against bacteria vitro.
